In 2025, the city hired Todd Prager and Associates to complete a second opinion Level 3 Advanced Tree Risk Assessment of the Davis Meeker Garry Oak. The assessment presented four options, and on April 15, 2025, the City Council chose “Option B,” which calls for retaining, managing, and monitoring the tree.
City staff then contracted with Todd Prager and Associates to create a detailed care plan, consult with tribal partners, and apply for the required permit from the Washington Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP). DAHP approved the first year permit in December 2025, focusing on improving soil conditions.
On March 12, 2026, the Historical Preservation Commission approved the work plan. After careful assessment and in an abundance of caution, the arborist team determined that the first phase of root zone preservation work should occur in November 2026, to avoid current drought conditions.
