Electric bicycles and scooters are becoming increasingly popular modes of transportation.
The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission offers an online resource for consumers to learn about the safety and legality of various modes of electric transportation in their E-ride Guide.
E-bikes, e-scooters, and e-motorcycles
Requirements for the use of electric transportation depend on whether the ride is an e-bike or an electric motorcycle.
- Bicycles are powered by pedals exclusively.
- E-bikes are bicycles assisted by electric motor and have limited speed capacity.
- E-scooters are subject to the same laws as e-bikes with a few important differences.
- E-scooters have a minimum rider age of 16.
- The speed limit for e-scooters is 15 mph on any roadway or bicycle lane.
- An e-motorcycle's sole power source is an electric motor and it doesn't have foot pedals. Any motor-driven cycle with a motor that exceeds 750 watts is held to the same laws as gas-powered motorcycles.
Many electric motorcycles are marketed as e-bikes, and consumers and parents should pay careful attention to safety risks associated with some of these vehicles. Visit the Washington Traffic Safety Commission's e-ride guide for a tool to help identify your electric ride and associated requirements.
