Deschutes Valley Trail: Tumwater Historical Park to Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls
April – December 2020
The Deschutes Valley Trail was first envisioned in the Tumwater Trails Plan. It was later added to the Thurston Regional Trails Plan and subsequently awarded federal funding administered through Thurston Regional Planning Council for design of the trail system. The 2.5-mile trail corridor is designed to serve as a regional asset providing community linkages or connections to the regional trail system that surrounds Tumwater.
This project includes construction of the Tumwater Historical Park to Brewery Park segment of the Deschutes Valley Trail. The meandering trail segment will be constructed on a historic train rail alignment on a slope paralleling and overlooking the Deschutes River. It will have a 10 to 12-foot wide paved surface with gravel shoulders. This trail segment will be set apart from other trails in the area given the rich history of the alignment; continuous views of the Deschutes River and Tumwater Falls; and unique design features including exposed bedrock, rockery walls, and custom railing. Extensive tree clearing and vegetation removal is necessary for the trail project—new vegetation and trees will be planted.
Planning (Complete) – 2011 to 2017
Design (Complete) – 2017 to 2020
Right-of-Way Acquisition (Complete) – 2018 to 2020
Construction – Estimated April 2020 to December 2020.
There should not be any notable traffic impacts as the project is entirely outside of the public right-of-way. Some minor delays may occur due to importing and exporting material for the project. There may limited road closures during tree removal.
Brewery Park Impacts
There will be limited parking available at Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls and interim closures of the existing walking trail in the Park. The parking area immediately next to Deschutes Parkway will be closed for the duration of the project. The trail closures may be frustrating, but are necessary during construction of an extensive retaining wall structure adjacent to the Falls Terrace Restaurant.
