Capitol Boulevard Widening: Israel Road to 73rd Avenue
October 22, 2018 – December 2019 (estimated date of completion)
The Capitol Boulevard Widening project includes the addition of a second southbound lane and improvements to the Capitol Boulevard intersections at Israel Road and Tumwater Boulevard.
Work includes construction of a second southbound through lane, turn lanes from Tumwater Boulevard to 73rd Avenue, road resurfacing from Israel Road to 73rd Avenue, and center medians at the intersections of Capitol Boulevard and Israel Road, and Capitol Boulevard and Tumwater Boulevard.
The Project also includes bike lanes, sidewalks, street lighting, storm drainage, and landscaping. New curb ramps, pedestrian push buttons, signage, and other improvements, required to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards, are part of the work. The existing overhead power lines south of Tumwater Boulevard to 73rd Avenue will be relocated underground. Water and sewer service will be provided to properties not currently served by the City.
Phase 2: The first phase of the Project focused on intersection upgrades in 2018. The second phase will complete the remainder of work.
- Phase 2 start date: August 2019
- Anticipated completion date: December 2019
Work may occur during any hour and day of the week during Phase 2.
Work on the second phase of the project includes work south of Tumwater Boulevard and has not been scheduled.
Capitol Boulevard will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between Israel Road and Tumwater Boulevard.
Sidewalks will be closed at times, but when possible, pedestrian detour signs will be used to help direct pedestrians to alternate routes.
The City received $1,444,661 in grant funding from the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) for the “Capitol Boulevard–Israel Road to 73rd Avenue” project.
