The Thurston County SWAT team is a multi-agency tactical response team that is made up of 23 tactical operators from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, Tumwater Police Department, Olympia Police Department, Yelm Police Department, Lacey Police Department, Tumwater Fire Department, Department of Fish and Wildlife, and an assigned Emergency Room Doctor from Providence St. Peter Hospital and Thurston County Medic One. The team has been actively serving the citizens of Thurston County, as well as assisting neighboring counties, for over 25 years. Their role is to assist law enforcement agencies with safe and successful resolutions of critical incidents that involve armed and dangerous subjects, barricaded subjects, hostage incidents, and the execution of high-risk warrants.
Additionally, the Thurston County SWAT team works in coordination with a 6 member hostage negotiations team, who provide assistance when law enforcement is confronted with subjects who refuse to surrender themselves or others.
The members of the team each hold a position within their agencies in the areas of patrol, detectives, metro, or other duties as assigned. The members are expected to stay both physically and mentally fit and maintain a high level of marksmanship.
