Tumwater's K-9 Team

  Mize and James

Officer Mize and his partner "James"

Along with regular patrol duties, the K-9 Unit provides expert support in locating suspects, tracking missing persons, narcotics detection, and locating potential evidence.

History of the K-9 Program

The Tumwater Police Department initiated the K-9 program in 2006, thanks to the efforts of Officer Mize and outstanding community support. After acquiring the distinctly calm and collected German Shepherd “Otis” vom Rugenhof from Hidden Haus Inc., Officer Mize and K-9 “Otis” became a certified tracking team in November 2006. The first three years of the program were fully funded by community donations. With continued support from the community, the team expanded its service by becoming a certified narcotics detection team in 2009. In his first eights, the K-9 unit deployed over 250 times and assisted eleven outside agencies. Our K-9 team also participates in numerous community events and demonstrations. Additionally, Officer Mize has achieved certification as a Master K-9 Handler.

K-9 James joins the Department

Finding a K-9 to follow in K-9 Otis’ rather large paw prints proved time intensive, but the Tumwater Police Department has found a perfect match. Originally from Holland, by way of C&J K9 in Rochester, Dutch Shepherd “James” arrived in Tumwater in 2016. K-9 James and Officer Mize were fast friends, and immediately began the process toward certification and training as a team. Now successfully certified in narcotics detection and tracking, James is on the job. When James isn’t dutifully protecting the Tumwater community with Officer Mize, he likes spending his time in their backyard and getting scratches behind the ears.
