Olympia Yacht Club Sailing Classes

Harbor Mice Exposure to Sailing Class

This class offers young children a fun introduction to water activities like sailing. While sailing concepts are introduced, the focus is more about having fun on boats in the water, rather than learning how to sail. The class provides a fun and safe environment to get young children excited about water activities and sailing. Students come away with an enthusiasm for sailing, and are excited to take sailing courses when they are old enough.

This class is not for youth who are fearful of water or who cannot swim. There is no swim test, but it is strongly suggested students have taken a swim class and/or can swim. Students must also be able to use the restroom by themselves.

Opti 1: Beginner Learn to Sail Class

Students will sail Optimist “Opti” sail boats - popular youth sail boats used across the world. By playing fun games and sailing close to the Olympia Yacht Club (OYC), sailors will receive a fun introduction to the world of sailing. This is a perfect class for youth who would like to learn about and try sailing but have no experience and have never taken a class with the OYC. However, if your sailor is rusty, or hasn’t sailed in a while and would like to start fresh, this course would also be ideal. Sailors may have to take this course a couple times before they are ready for Opti 2. Instructors will inform parents what class to take next. Students must be able to swim and pass a simple swim/capsize test.
