Compensation and Benefits
2020 Entry Level Firefighter monthly wage is $5419 for a Firefighter Recruit and $6193 after six months.
Generous benefit package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, LEOFF Plan 2 Retirement, WSCFF Medical Expense Reimbursement, Washington State Deferred Compensation program, and additional supplemental programs. Candidates with less than one (1) year of paid experience and those who do not possess the minimum qualifications should apply as an Entry Level Firefighter.
2020 Selection Process for Entry Level Firefighters
The City of Tumwater is seeking qualified candidates to participate in an annual recruitment process to establish a 2020 hiring list. All dates are tentative until further notice.
Step 1: Written Exam
Take the online test anytime before May 31, 2020
Applicants interested in this position must complete the written exam (Firefighter Selection Tool) through Public Safety Testing. Please visit the Public Safety testing website at www.PublicSafetyTesting.com for information regarding the testing process. All written tests must be completed between June 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020.
A valid CPAT certification is required by September 1, 2020. If a candidate does not have a valid CPAT certification and receives a conditional offer, the City will pay the CPAT testing fee.
Step 2: Speed Interview
June 15-19, 2020
All candidates with a combined score of 80.00% on the PST written test will invited to participate in 9-minute speed interviews scheduled for June 15-19, 2020, in Tumwater. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70% to be considered for the next step. Volunteer points are added to passing scores for those that qualify.
Step 3: Oral Board Interviews
July 6-10, 2020
Top candidates from speed interviews will be invited to participate in oral board interviews scheduled for July 6-10, 2020, in Tumwater. At the time of invitation for oral boards, applicants will be required to complete a City of Tumwater application. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70%.
Step 4: Eligibility List
July 17, 2020
Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility register based on their scores achieved on PST Written Exam (30%) and the Oral Board Interviews (70%), plus Veteran's preference. Final scores will be posted around July 17, 2020.
Step 5: Chief's Interview
July 20-24, 2020
The most qualified candidates will be invited to a Chief's Interview scheduled for July 20-24, 2019 in Tumwater.
Step 6: Conditional Offer
August 1, 2020
August 1-16, 2019
Around August 1, 2020, conditional offers of employment will be issued. Candidates will be required to participate in pre-employment screenings, including a medical exam sometime between August 1-16. Candidates will not be required to stay in Tumwater the full duration of that time period, but must be available to attend the medical exam in Tumwater during that period.
A valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification is required by September 1, 2020.
Proof of certification must be provided by this date. If a candidate does not have a valid CPAT certification and receives a conditional offer, the City will pay the CPAT testing fee. CPAT certification is accepted from PST or another agency provider licensed by the IAFF/IAFC. To be valid, CPAT testing must be completed between September 1, 2019 and September 1, 2020.
How to prepare for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Engage in advanced physical training prior to the CPAT, targeting muscle groups used in lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and other actions related to Firefighter tasks. A workout program may include distance running, sprints, rowing, stair climbing with weight pack and weight lifting to develop both the upper and lower body. Step 7: Recruit Academy
September 5, 2020
September 5, 2020 - Successful candidates will begin Firefighter Recruit Academy located at Bates Technical College in Tacoma.
