Training & Professional Development
All firefighters participate in basic fire suppression and EMS training. Tumwater Fire Department is right-sized to offer every firefighter the opportunity for specialty training, assignments, and support for career advancement.
Compensation and Benefits
2019 Entry Level Firefighter monthly wage is $5287 for a Firefighter Recruit and $6042 after six months.
2019 Lateral Firefighter monthly wage is $6,042 - $7,553.
Generous benefit package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, LEOFF Plan 2 Retirement, WSCFF Medical Expense Reimbursement, Washington State Deferred Compensation program, and additional supplemental programs. The position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2409. The 2017-2019 Agreement is available online.
The City is accepting applications for Entry Level and Lateral firefighters.
Candidates with less than one (1) year of paid experience and those who do not possess the minimum qualifications should apply as an Entry Level Firefighter.
New Selection Process for Entry Level Firefighters
Step 1: Written Exam
Take the online test anytime before June 7, 2019
Applicants interested in this position must complete the written exam (Firefighter Selection Tool) through Public Safety Testing. Please visit the Public Safety testing website at www.PublicSafetyTesting.com for information regarding the testing process. All written tests must be completed between June 8, 2018 and June 7, 2019.
A valid CPAT certification is required by September 1, 2019. If a candidate does not have a valid CPAT certification and receives a conditional offer, the City will pay the CPAT testing fee.
Step 2: Speed Interview
June 24-28, 2019
All candidates with a combined score of 80.00% on the PST written test will invited to participate in 9-minute speed interviews scheduled for June 24-28, 2019, in Tumwater. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70% to be considered for the next step. Volunteer points are added to passing scores for those that qualify.
Step 3: Oral Board Interviews
July 8-11, 2019
Top candidates from speed interviews will be invited to participate in oral board interviews scheduled for July 8-11, 2019, in Tumwater. At the time of invitation for oral boards, applicants will be required to complete a City of Tumwater application. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70%.
Step 4: Eligibility List
July 12, 2019
Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility register based on their scores achieved on PST Written Exam (30%) and the Oral Board Interviews (70%), plus Veteran's preference. Final scores will be posted around July 12, 2019.
Step 5: Chief's Interview
July 22-26, 2019
The most qualified candidates will be invited to a Chief's Interview scheduled for July 22-26, 2019 in Tumwater.
Step 6: Conditional Offer
July 31, 2019
August 1-16, 2019
Around July 31, 2019, conditional offers of employment will be issued. Candidates will be required to participate in pre-employment screenings, including a medical exam sometime between August 1-16. Candidates will not be required to stay in Tumwater the full duration of that time period, but must be available to attend the medical exam in Tumwater during that period.
A valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification is required by September 1, 2019.
Proof of certification must be provided by this date. If a candidate does not have a valid CPAT certification and receives a conditional offer, the City will pay the CPAT testing fee. CPAT certification is accepted from PST or another agency provider licensed by the IAFF/IAFC. To be valid, CPAT testing must be completed between September 1, 2018 and September 1, 2019.
How to prepare for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Engage in advanced physical training prior to the CPAT, targeting muscle groups used in lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and other actions related to Firefighter tasks. A workout program may include distance running, sprints, rowing, stair climbing with weight pack and weight lifting to develop both the upper and lower body. Step 7: Recruit Academy
September 3, 2019
September 3, 2019 - Successful candidates will begin Firefighter Recruit Academy located at Bates Technical College in Tacoma.
Candidates will receive updates regarding application status via email.

Selection Process for Lateral Firefighters
To qualify as a Lateral Firefighter, candidates must have been employed at least 36 months and successfully completed probation as a full-time, paid employee of a firefighting agency. Additionally, Lateral candidates must have current IFSAC Firefighter I certification and Washington State or Nationally Registered EMT Certification.
Step 1: Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for a Lateral Firefighter will be invited to take a written exam on June 18, 2019. To apply, visit the Lateral Firefighter job posting on the City's employment page.
Exam consists of approximately 50 questions covering:
IFSAC Firefighter I
Emergency Medical Technician National Standards
Candidates must pass the written exam with a minimum score of 70% to advance to the oral board step.
Step 2: Candidates that pass the written exam will be invited to an oral board interview during the week of July 8-11, 2019.
Final Score: Candidates Final Score will consist of written exam (30%) and oral board score (70%) plus veterans preference points if applicable to create final combined score for ranking.
Chief's Interview will be scheduled during the week of July 22-26, 2019.
*Candidates must successfully pass Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by September 1, 2019. Candidates are responsible for testing CPAT fee.
