Tumwater Police Citizen’s Academy is a classroom-based course designed to provide residents with a broad understanding of local police services and the criminal justice system. Commissioned police officers and detectives participate as instructors, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the police department and hands-on learning experiences.

The program is FREE, registration is required.

What will I learn?

The course provides a comprehensive overview of the Tumwater Police Department’s operations. Topics include criminal law and the justice system, police patrol procedures, use of force, 911 communications, crime prevention, DUI/ traffic enforcement, domestic violence, school safety, narcotics, and investigations. Instruction includes presentations, demonstrations by the SWAT team and K-9 unit, and a mock crime scene investigation. All participants receive a diploma and a Tumwater University Police Citizen’s Academy t-shirt.

When is the Academy?

A time commitment of two evenings per week—Mondays and Wednesdays— for four weeks is required. These eight sessions build on one another. Class begins September 30, 2019, and continues through October 30, 2019. Classes will not meet on October 14 or 16. Class time is from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. each night at Tumwater City Hall Council Chambers.

Who can attend?

Participants must be at least 18 years old or a high school senior, live or work in the City of Tumwater, and have a clear criminal background check, conducted and approved by the Tumwater Police.

Once your registration is processed, you will be notified after background checks have been conducted and approved by the Tumwater Police. This process is generally conducted and admission notifications sent by September 16.

Class size is limited to 30 students. Alternates may be chosen if space becomes available. Tumwater residents will receive priority, however, non-residents are welcome to apply and may be admitted as alternates.

More about Tumwater University

Since 2012, the City has hosted Tumwater University, a college-themed community education and engagement program. After graduation from Tumwater University, many "students" expressed a much better understanding of their local government and its services. The Police Citizen's Academy was developed in 2015, to offer a personal look at police services, public safety, and the criminal justice system in our community, and continue the tradition of Tumwater University's fun learning atmosphere.
