A message from John Doan, City Administrator

John Doan, City Administrator

Welcome to the City of Tumwater. Whether you live in Tumwater, do business here, or are visiting us; it is our goal to provide you with a quality experience and excellent City services. Our over 200 employees pride themselves in working to keep the City and people safe, the roads good, the utilities quality, the environment clean, and a high quality of life. This is a great place to live, have a business, work, and visit.

I’ve been with the City of Tumwater since 2010. As the City Administrator, I work closely with the Mayor and am responsible for providing guidance and direction to the City's nine departments. I answer directly to Mayor Kmet, the City Council, and to you. Before coming to Tumwater, I had several roles with the City of Sumner including working as their City Administrator. I was also an engineer and planner with the City of Seattle for six years. My education and background is in engineering, planning, and not-for-profit leadership. I like Tumwater’s western pioneer history, the opportunities available here, and the amazing partnerships we have with other agencies.  My family and I love calling Tumwater home.

If you have any questions or concerns about City government operations, including ideas for how we can better serve you, please contact me either by phone at (360) 754-4120 or e-mail at
