About the Job

An integral member of the City’s leadership team, the Public Works Director serves a critical role—overseeing capital projects,  design and operation of the transportation, water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems for Tumwater. The Director is the chief spokesperson and serves as a consultant to the City Administrator and City Council on matters pertaining to the City’s Public Works programs. 

The Director is accountable for the effective operation of all public works programs within the City and plans, organizes, and directs all activities of the Department. As a department director, the position supervises, directs and evaluates all department staff either directly or through subordinate supervisors.

Salary & Benefits

The salary range is $117,852–143,604 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. We offer a generous benefits package that includes a cafeteria health care plan and a 401(a) plan with a 5% match.

About the Department

Tumwater’s Public Works Department is comprised of two divisions—Engineering and Operations & Maintenance. 

The Engineering Division manages the City’s Capital Facilities Plan projects and the administrative aspects of the utility and transportation systems with 20 budgeted staff positions. GIS mapping and survey, development review coordination, public information, and customer service response programs are coordinated through Engineering. 

The Operations & Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the transportation and utility infrastructure with 35 budgeted staff positions, plus seasonal employees. City vehicles and rolling stock are maintained by Public Works employees, and included in the Fleet & Equipment Rental and Replacement Fund.City utilities are well-funded and experience regular inflationary increases and strong support from elected officials. 

The annual operating budget for public works funds is approximately $16.5 million and the total Capital Budget is $13.2 million. The operating budget includes $6 million in annual expenditures to LOTT that are pass-through dollars.
