Biographical Information

John Doan has been the City Administrator of Tumwater since January 2010. He was previously the Administrator and Community Development Director for the City of Sumner and a senior planner for the City of Seattle. John graduated with degrees in geological and civil engineering from Washington State University and received a Master’s degree from Seattle University’s Not-For-Profit Leadership Program. In 2008, he completed the Harvard University Kennedy School Program in State and Local Government. He has served on the boards of several community organizations addressing education, business, and community leadership needs. While with the City of Sumner, they received an Association of Washington Cities Municipal Achievement Award of Merit for Sumner University. Variations of the program have been replicated in several other communities in Washington State. 

John’s interests at work are organizational improvement, collaboration, community engagement, building great places, and education. He has two children; one is a facility planner for a large aerospace manufacturer and one is a senior in high school.
