Water conservation is not only important for drinking water systems, but also for wastewater systems. If we conserve water that is going down the drain, there is less water requiring treatment when it reaches our wastewater treatment plant.
LOTT is the wastewater treatment facility for our region. It includes wastewater from Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater. In 1997, LOTT partnered with the cities to promote water conservation to reduce wastewater. Many people in the community participated in the program that offered free water conservation devices and rebates on appliances such as washing machines and toilets. In 2024, the LOTT program came to an end. In total, it is estimated the region saved 1.3 million gallons per day (gpd).
Although LOTT’s program has ended, the City of Tumwater will continue to provide free water conservation devices and rebates for washing machines and toilets. We will also be expanding our water conservation program in 2025 by adding a water conservation specialist to our drinking water staff.
