SIDEWALK INFILL PROGRAM
Tumwater residents can receive assistance with sidewalk construction along their property frontages. In general, the city will contribute up to 80% with residents assuming 20% of the cost of construction, with the work performed by a city-initiated construction contract. The preliminary estimated cost of construction can be calculated at $37.00 per frontage foot for a typical sidewalk, but actual costs will vary depending on the specific site conditions.
Selection Criteria
Participation will be limited to residential infill lots, not otherwise required to construct frontage improvements.
Sidewalks selected for construction under this program should complete a missing link, or a portion thereof, of an existing sidewalk system.
Priority will be given to those requests that are along major pedestrian corridors such as schools and bus routes.
Program Outline
The city will provide the design at no cost to the participants.
Eligible construction activities include road construction between the existing road and the new sidewalk, excavation for and construction of curb, sidewalk and driveway. Program participation for driveways will be limited to the city’s right-of-way. If the homeowner desires a driveway, or portion thereof, beyond the city’s right-of-way on private property, the construction cost for the work on private property will not be eligible for cost sharing, but can be included in the city construction contract.
Yard restoration will be limited to backfilling the area disturbed by construction. Any existing landscaping or lawn restoration will be the property owner’s sole responsibility and will not be included in the city construction contract.
Once selected for participation, property owners will be notified and given a preliminary estimate so they can determine if they wish to participate. Following receipt of bids from contractors, property owners will again be notified and requested to pay their portion of the construction costs based on the actual unit prices received.
