Early Tumwater Timeline 

1845 October. The Simmons-Bush party arrive at the lower falls of the Deschutes River.  They name their settlement New Market.
1846 Michael T. Simmons builds a grist mill at the lower falls.
1847 October.  The first sawmill on Puget Sound is opened by Michael T. Simmons.
1850 The Crosby family arrives at New Market.  Clanrick Crosby buys Michael T. Simmons’ land claim, including the gristmill and sawmill.
Edmund Sylvester and others lay out the town of Olympia.
1852 The Ward & Hays Sawmill is started.  It can cut 2,000 to 3,000 feet of lumber per day.
Thurston County is established.
1853 Washington Territory is established.
1854

The Ward & Hays Gristmill is opened.

1855

Puget Sound Indian War breaks out.  A large number of New Market residents move to blockhouses for protection.

1858

The Nathaniel Crosby Home is built.

1860

The Long Bridge is built, connecting Tumwater and Olympia.

Abraham Lincoln is elected president of the United States.

1869

The Town of Tumwater is incorporated.
