October. The Simmons-Bush party arrive at the lower falls of the Deschutes River. They name their settlement New Market. |

1846 |
Michael T. Simmons builds a grist mill at the lower falls. |

1847 |
October. The first sawmill on Puget Sound is opened by Michael T. Simmons. |
|
1850 |
The Crosby family arrives at New Market. Clanrick Crosby buys Michael T. Simmons’ land claim, including the gristmill and sawmill. |

Edmund Sylvester and others lay out the town of Olympia. |
|
1852 |
The Ward & Hays Sawmill is started. It can cut 2,000 to 3,000 feet of lumber per day. |

Thurston County is established. |

1853 |
Washington Territory is established. |

1854 |
The Ward & Hays Gristmill is opened. |

1855 |
Puget Sound Indian War breaks out. A large number of New Market residents move to blockhouses for protection. |

The Nathaniel Crosby Home is built. |

1860 |
The Long Bridge is built, connecting Tumwater and Olympia. |
