Apply Now for Lodging Tax Tourism Funds (August 1 - August 31)
The City of Tumwater invites agencies providing SERVICES THAT GENERATE TOURISM in Tumwater to submit lodging tax funding applications for the year 2019. The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee encourages new events and festivals in Tumwater. Lodging tax funds can help with marketing or operation costs of special events and festivals designed to attract tourists (RCW 67.28.080; RCW 67.28.1816).
Completed applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018, at Tumwater City Hall. Postmarks, late, or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Completed applications and budget materials can be mailed to Hanna Miles, Executive Department, 555 Israel Road SW, Tumwater, WA 98501 or dropped off at Tumwater City Hall during normal business hours.
Agencies that have met the application deadline and completed the application correctly will be contacted to schedule an interview before the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee in mid-to-late September. The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee will make funding recommendations to the Tumwater City Council as part of the current budget cycle. Successful applicants will be required to enter into an Service Provider Agreement with the City of Tumwater and submit a Final Report about their tourism activities.
Tumwater Lodging Tax Advisory Committee
The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee is composed of a cross-section of representatives from the tourism industry. The Committee meets two to three times per year to develop a recommendation to the City Council for distribution of lodging tax funds. A policy to guide the City's investment of lodging tax in tourism related activities, facilities, and programs has been established through Resolution No. R2016-006.
Lodging tax, also called hotel/motel tax, is an additional 2% charge assessed to each hotel or motel room stay in the City. These revenues are earmarked for funding tourism-related activities as prescribed by state law. RCW 67.28.180; RCW 67.28.181; RCW 67.28.1816; Resolution No. R97-022; TMC Chapter 3.12
Funded agencies are required to apply each year and report back to the City on the use of funds. The open application period is typically the first business day in August to the last business day in August with application review and funding recommendations in September/October.
Residency & Term
The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee is a five-to-seven member committee composed of 2-3 representatives from the hotel/motel industry, 2-3 potential recipients of Lodging Tax funds and one City representative, who serves as Chair. Committee member roles are determined by RCW 67.28.1817 and Ordinance No. O2017-011. Terms are reviewed on an annual basis.
