CITY OF TUMWATER

ADVISORY BOARDS, COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES

The City of Tumwater encourages citizen participation in governmental functions through a variety of avenues. Citizen advisory boards, commissions and committees represent an effective forum for individual participation. Appointments to City advisory bodies are the Mayor's prerogative; some, but not all, appointments are subject also to confirmation by the Tumwater City Council.

In Tumwater, policy dictates that most advisory appointees reside within the City limits. The Planning Commission (Ordinance No. 1383, effective May 23, 1993) requires that one member out of the nine regular members reside within the City's urban growth boundary. The City's Historic Preservation Commission (Ordinance No. 1400, effective 10-26-93) provides for exception to the residency requirements to assure that at least two representatives are from the professional disciplines specified in the ordinance. The Building Board of Appeals (TMC 15.46.010) is also exempted from the residency requirement.  The Library Advisory Board (Ordinance No. O2000-021, effective August 2000) allows one member out of five regular members to reside within the Tumwater Urban Growth Area, or who holds a Tumwater business license, or who owns property within the City but is not a City resident.

Those citizens interested in being considered for appointment are asked to provide pertinent personal background information such as previous work or volunteer experience, or areas of interest and expertise, and prioritize their choices for involvement.

As openings occur, the Mayor will normally contact those individuals for whom information is on file. Generally, a meeting will be scheduled between the Mayor and applicant to discuss the responsibilities, time requirements and other related details concerning the proposed appointment. Committee vacancies are publicized through the City's website, Tumwater TV, and The Olympian. Interested citizens can complete the e-mail form below or call the City Administrative Officers at 754-4120 to request an information packet. Completed information should be returned to: The Office of the Mayor, City of Tumwater, 555 Israel Road S.W., Tumwater, WA 98501.
